Connections of Elarqam remain perplexed by the colt’s poor showing in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday.

The impeccably-bred son of Frankel out of Attraction was slightly lame after fading into sixth place behind surprise winner Romanised but is sound again.

The usual tests have so far failed to totally explain why the Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old, who is owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, ran below form.

“He’s fine this morning. He just went out for a trot this morning. He’s sound and came out of the race fine,” said Johnston’s son and assistant, Charlie.

“We won’t make any hasty decisions on the back of that. We’ll speak to Angus (Gold, owner’s racing manager) and the team at Shadwell and have a bit of a think as to where we go from here.

“Obviously it wasn’t his running. He beat Gustav Klimt by two lengths at Newmarket and he finished well behind that horse on Saturday, so we know it was too bad to be true.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board and take it from there.”
