The Furness Fish & Game Handicap Hurdle at Cartmel was declared void after the first-flight fall of The Compeller.
Given Cartmel’s tight track and the position of winded jockey Derek Fox on the course, there was no possibility of the remaining 15 runners being directed around the hurdle to continue the race.
Clerk of the course Anthea Moorshead said: “Thankfully Derek was just badly winded.
“He laid very still and didn’t move at all and was laid in the bypass ground. The medical team were on the spot quickly and put the screens around him immediately and we had a horse behind the hurdle.
“Thankfully both horse and jockey were all right. We had a vet on the scene immediately who assessed the situation, but with the jockey in the bypass ground, we didn’t have sufficient space for the horses to get by.
“The jockeys were all very supportive of the decision afterwards and I was very proud of the team on the ground who implemented this for the first time.”
