Chelmsford has been given permission by the British Horseracing Authority to install a turf track alongside its existing all-weather surface.
The BHA had initial reservations about the new surface and at a meeting in March, it requested more information to reconsider the plan.
Having received those details from the BHA’s racecourse inspectorate team, the Professional Jockeys’ Association safety officers and racecourse representatives, the green light has been given as long as certain conditions are met.
These include that on fixtures allocated to Chelmsford by the BHA, no more than three races will be run on turf with a strong recommendation this directive is followed on the racecourse’s own fixtures.
At the moment no turf racing is scheduled to take place in 2019 and all fixtures allocated will take place on the all-weather.
A decision on the timing of the first turf races is not required until the details of the races at each fixture are published in the programme book.
