Trainer Freddy Head was left unhappy after Polydream was scratched on veterinary advice from the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
The probable favourite was declared a non-runner, after officials felt Polydream was not trotting properly.
Head, who won this race twice as a jockey aboard Miesque in in 1987 and 1988, and saddled Goldikova to win three successive renewals between 2008 and 2010, vented his frustration at the decision.
“The vet decided she wasn’t trotting well and they have scratched her,” said the French handler.
“The filly always trots like that. She hasn’t got the best knees so she’s always trotting a bit on the side like that, but she was born that way and has been winning Group races.
“It’s a disgrace. I’m furious – it’s something incredible.
“I’ve been coming here for the Breeders’ Cup many times, I’ve won it three times. If I bring a horse to the States, it’s because I think she can run and run well.
“She was the favourite and was going very well. I was very happy with the way she was cantering and galloping.
“I think it’s very bad.”
