There was to be no fairytale return to the Breeders’ Cup meeting for Toast Of New York, as Jamie Osborne’s 2014 Classic runner-up had to settle for fourth in the Marathon at Churchill Downs.
The one-mile-six-furlong event went to Rocketry, trained by Jimmy Jerkens and ridden by the in-form Joel Rosario, although once sweeping to the front he had to hold the rally of Bob Baffert’s long-time leader Dabster.
Osborne said: “He’s been out here for six weeks, and as second reserve for the Classic he had no chance of getting in, so we had to try this, which is four furlongs longer than he has ever run before in his life.
“He travelled well, but with the choke out early on, and has really run like a non-stayer. I think the aggression he showed early on cost him towards the end of the race, but I’m not too disappointed.
“I think there are races still to be won with this horse, and that he retains a lot of his ability.
“I shall have a chat with the owners before we decide what to do next.”
Jerkens said of the winner: “He gets into that little rhythm and you just have to make sure when he makes his run he’s in the clear. Bobby B’s horses never give up, unbelievable.”
