Shamrock Rose got up on the line to deny Chalon in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on dirt at Churchill Downs.

Irad Ortiz Jr delivered the Mark Casse-trained filly to snatch victory in a four-way finish and spring a 20-1 surprise after Chalon had looked the likely winner when taking a handy lead early in the straight.

Anonymity and Marley’s Freedom were right behind in third and fourth places.

It was a second winner at the two-day fiesta for Ortiz following his triumph on the brilliant Newspaperofrecord on Friday.

City Of Light blew the opposition away with an emphatic front-running performance to turn the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile into a procession.

The four-year-old, who captured the scalp of Accelerate in the spring, never saw another rival as he stormed to victory for trainer Michael McCarthy and jockey Javier Castellano.

Hot favourite Catalina Cruiser was among the first beaten as City Of Light (11-4) ran away with the prize. Seeking The Soul and Bravazo took the minor honours.

“I thought it would be a mismatch. I’ve been waiting for this for quite a long time. I think we gave the people what they wanted today,” said McCarthy.

“I thought he would love this race track. Over the summer he ran over some race tracks he was particularly fond of. Today back to one turn where his best races were, we thought we’d let him go and run away from there. He did just that.”

Roy H ran out an convincing winner as he lifted the Sprint for the second year running and also gave trainer Peter Miller a double following the victory of Stormy Liberal in the Turf Sprint.

Travelling well throughout on the heel of the leaders, Roy H (5-2) cruised into the lead in the straight to comfortably score from Whitmore and Imperial Hint in the hands of Paco Lopez.

Miller said: “He’s just a real solid horse and brings it every time.

“Words can’t express the feelings.”

Monomoy Girl made amends for being disqualified on her previous start with a superb display in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

The Brad Cox-trained three-year-old has been prolific in Grade One company and showed her class to romp home from Wow Cat in the hands of Florent Geroux after leading at the top of the straight.

Cox said: “I’m so proud of her, she’s been training so well and didn’t let us down.

“I haven’t talked it out with the owners, but I’m sure they’re game for next year.”
