Flashcard could be put away for the winter as connections eye a lucrative campaign in 2019 that they hope could see him run at Royal Ascot.

The Britannia Handicap is one of the targets owners Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds have in mind for the son of Fast Company, trained by Andrew Balding.

He gave them a taste of what might be when running a huge race to finish second in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes at the Curragh two weeks ago, when he earned 57,000 euros. The winner, Barbill, collected a cool 147,000 euros.

A step up to Group class has all but been ruled out for his next race, because the prize money is not half as attractive.

“He ran a great race in the Ireland sales race. He was possibly a little bit unlucky where he ended up racing,” said Kennet Valley’s racing manager Sam Hoskins.

“The handicapper has rated him 93. We could consider a race like the Horris Hill (at Newbury) for him, but the prize money is pretty poor – so I think we are going to protect his handicap mark and possibly put him away for next season.

“We’ll maybe go for a couple of big three-year-old handicaps that lead up to the Britannia. I think we will go that kind of route.

“If the Horris Hill was worth more money we’d go there. It’s worth 22 grand to the winner, and is a Group Three.

“He’s a very nice horse, and we’re hoping he might be a Pattern horse in the future, so we’ll see how we go.”

He added: “The race we’re thinking of is at Goodwood (over seven furlongs) in May, won by William Haggas’ Society Power this year. It was worth £62,000 to the winner and it’s a handicap.

“He’s a horse for the future, and it might do him the world of good just having a break.

“We think he’ll get a mile, but if we did go again this year it would be over seven furlongs.

“He’s a lovely horse.”
