Fergal O’Brien is hoping star mare Colin’s Sister will return to action next season.

The dual Grade Two-winning hurdler was last seen finishing a fine fourth in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, after which she was due to be retired.

However, it was later discovered she was unable to breed and while she will not return to training this term, O’Brien believes there is every chance her racing days might not be over yet.

He said: “She picked up a little niggly injury after Cheltenham and her fantastic run in the Stayers’ to finish fourth. The plan was for her to be retired and go to stud, but that went awry as she had a little cyst on one of her ovaries.

“She has been an unbelievable mare and has taken us all over the place and her owner, who bred her, is understandably proud of her.

“She will have the rest of this season off, but I will speak to the owner and I’d like to think she will be back in training next year.

“She has earned her year off and she is not going to be carrying a foal around. She will come back bigger and stronger.”
