Chatez rolled back the years to leave his younger rivals in the shade with a game success in the MansionBet Spring Cup at Newbury.

After failing to fire over hurdles, the Alan King-trained eight-year-old, who was the joint oldest runner in the mile contest, made a successful switch back to the Flat when getting up by a neck to deny Indeed.

Assistant trainer Olly Stevens said of the 16-1 winner: “He has always been good. Jumping has not suited him the last two years. A decision was made by the boss and the owner to save him for the Flat.

“He needs soft ground, that’s why we skipped Doncaster the other week. He is a very tough horse.

“William Buick said he was very happy over a strongly-run mile. We could probably go a little further if we ever needed to.”

The victory of Smad Place in the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup will always live long in the memory of winning owner Peter Andrews, but Chatez has a special place in his affections, too.

He said: “Obviously the Hennessy was the greatest moment. We are really jumps people. We made the mistake of trying to train Chatez as a jumper. We have brought him back on the Flat and he has done us proud.”

Andrew Balding hinted at an outing in next month’s Dante at York for Raise You, after he completed a double for the Kingsclere handler with an impressive six-length victory under Oisin Murphy in division one of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes.

Balding said of the 10-11 winner: “The form of his maiden got franked on Friday with King Ottokar winning.

“He does quite a lot of work on his own as he can be a little bit keen. Oisin liked him. We made an entry in the Dante not so long ago. I don’t see why we wouldn’t go.”

Fox Chairman (15-8) and Silvestre de Sousa got the ball rolling for Balding when making a big impression on his debut, quickening clear late on to take division one of the mile prize by four lengths.

Balding added: “He was just quite backward last year. I could not be more happier with the way he has done it. We have not got any really fancy entries. He might stay a bit further.”
