Andre Fabre runs two of his most promising colts against each other in Sunday’s Prix de Fontainebleau at ParisLongchamp as Persian King and Epic Hero face off.

Persian King is the better known of the pair, having travelled to Newmarket

last October to win the Group Three Autumn Stakes.

Since then he has been bought into by Godolphin, who also own Epic Hero.

The latter had just one run at two when only third at Saint-Cloud – but on his reappearance on the all-weather at Chantilly, he bolted up by eight lengths.

Fabre had wanted to keep them apart and was considering the Craven Stakes for Epic Hero, but anticipated fast ground at Newmarket means he stays closer to home.

Fabre said of Persian King: “Looking at his breeding, I’d think 10 furlongs is possible this year. We are still learning about Kingman as a sire.

“His dam is by Dylan Thomas, so there is stamina there.”

Fabre had been lukewarm about returning to Newmarket for the Guineas with Persian King, but the recent apparently minor setback to favourite Too Darn Hot may have an influence.

“His form last year is solid,” he said.

“the horse he beat at Newmarket (Magna Grecia) went on to win a Group One – I’d say it’s a level below Too Darn Hot and Ten Sovereigns, but not too far.

“This is the best time of year – there are lots of questions to answer.

Some will disappoint you, and some will surprise you.”

Of Epic Hero, Fabre said: “I doubt he will stay any further than a mile this season – he has lots of pace.”

Paul Cole sends Duke Of Hazzard over for the Group Three – while Pascal Bary runs Prince Range, and Mauricio Delcher Sanchez is represented by Prince Hamlet.
