Paul Midgley finds it difficult to split his three runners in the Scottish Sprint Cup Handicap at Musselburgh on Saturday.
The North Yorkshire handler believes Final Venture, Captain Colby and the 2017 winner Line Of Reason should not be far away in the five-furlong dash, granted luck in running.
Midgley had hoped to have four runners, but his other five-day entry, Tanasoq, met with a slight training setback and has to have “an easy week”.
However, he still fancies his chances with his trio in a typically competitive renewal of this valuable sprint.
“I expect all three, if they get the run of the race, to be there or thereabouts,” said Midgley.
“Final Venture is having his first run of the year. He’s done plenty of work. He’s been galloping well and he looks well.
“He’s got a good draw (17) and is ready to go.”
Midgley is happy to run Line Of Reason quickly after the nine-year-old was second to Teruntum Star at Beverley on Wednesday.
“He ran well and has come out of it really well,” he said.
“Hopefully he’ll have his ground again and he’s won this race before.
“Captain Colby ran the other week and pulled a shoe off early so ran no race.
“He’s in good form again now.”
Jim Goldie has primed Primo’s Comet for this spring target and is keen on his prospects.
“Obviously he’s at the bottom of the handicap. He’s got a good draw (12),” said the Glasgow handler.
“I’ve trained him for the race. I’ve given him a nice break. He’s fit from the all-weather and is fresh and well.”
Michael Appleby has warned he might not risk Saaheq should he deem conditions to be on the fast side.
“He’s in good order, but I’m a little bit concerned about the ground,” said the Oakham trainer.
“He’ll run if it’s good ground. If it goes quick, he might not run.
“I think he has a good chance. I just hope the ground doesn’t dry up too much.”
David Griffiths will make a late call as to whether Ornate turns out quickly following his victory at Newmarket on Thursday.
“I’m not sure if he’ll run at Musselburgh,” said the Bawtry trainer.
“He seems fine and good, but it’s a long season and he’s got a 5lb penalty as well.
“I was delighted to see him win back on the grass and off that mark.”
