Hughie Morrison is keen to try Marmelo in a Group One over a mile and a half, with the Coronation Cup at the Derby meeting on the agenda.
The Melbourne Cup runner-up is improving with age and seemed better than ever when coming from the clouds to win on his return to action at Newbury in the John Porter Stakes.
Now six, Marmelo is likely to return to Australia at the end of the season.
“I think we’re heading for the Coronation, we’ve taken him out of the Yorkshire Cup,” said Morrison.
“It might be outside of our comfort zone, but let’s have a go.
“It’s normally a small field and we’d like soft ground. He takes his races better when it’s soft and has been unlucky that he hasn’t raced on soft ground more than he has.
“He does have two course records to his name, but ideally you’d run him on soft.
“If you can keep horses sound, then six should be when they peak. There are not many in top condition at six, but you do see it with sprinters.”
