Karl Burke is dreaming of further big-race glory for Kelly’s Dino after he booked his ticket for the Sky Bet Ebor with victory at Newmarket on Friday evening.
The six-year-old is on course to contest the £1million York feature on August 24 after picking up a 4lb penalty that is set to guarantee his place in the Ebor field.
The six-year-old had previously landed last month’s Old Newton Cup at Haydock before finishing a close-up fifth over the Ebor course and distance in the Group Three Silver Cup seven days later.
Burke was delighted to see his charge bounce back to winning ways on the July Course.
He said: “I think that puts him into the Ebor now with the 4lb penalty he picks up. He has been a great horse, but he always saves a bit for himself and that is paying dividends at this stage of his career.
“I mentioned to Liam (Kelly, part owner) about the Ebor a little while ago, but I knew he had to come up in the weights a little bit to get into a normal Ebor, never mind a £1million one.
“We have got our ticket for the lottery now.”
Looking beyond an outing on the Knavesmire later this month, the Leyburn handler has has earmarked a potential trip to Australia, with the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November an obvious target.
Burke added: “Hopefully he can perform well enough in the Ebor to finance a trip to Australia as there is good prize-money a fair way down the placings.
“If he went to Australia I don’t know which race he’d go for yet, but there are a lot of good handicaps and races he could run in.”
