The British and Irish raiders were out of luck at Arlington on Saturday evening with three second places to show for their efforts.

Aidan O’Brien’s Magic Wand was run down close home in the Arlington Million by Bricks And Mortar, trained by Chad Brown.

Brown also won the Beverly D. Stakes with Sistercharlie and the Secretariat Stakes with Valid Point.

Bricks And Mortar is the dominant force on turf in America and booked his ticket for the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the process.

The winner’s breeding rights have bee purchased by Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai Farm in Japan who lost Deep Impact recently.

“He’s an amazing horse,” said co-owner Seth Klarman of Klaravich Stables, who owns the horse with Bill Lawrence.

“Chad got him ready off a long layoff to do what he’s done. Chad and his staff have just done a remarkable job. It’s been an amazing experience.”

O’Brien also played second fiddle to Brown in the Secretariat with Van Beethoven unable to reel in Valid Point.

Wayne Lordan told of Van Beethoven: “He ran well. I would have liked to have ridden him a bit more forward, but we got away a little bit slow. We ran a very good race.”

William Haggas’ Awesometank was second to Brown’s Sistercharlie in the Beverly D in which Fleeting was fourth for O’Brien.

Sistercharlie was winning her fifth straight Grade One and second Beverly D.

“She’s the horse of a lifetime,” said Brown.

“It is such an honour to be associated with her.”

Owner Peter Brant now has his eyes on a possible clash with Enable at the Breeders’ Cup. Sistercharlie won the Filly & Mare Turf last year while Enable won the Turf at the same meeting.

“I’d like to run against Enable. It would be great for the sport,” said Brant.
