Walford waiting game after Magical Max setback

Unbeaten juvenile will be back next year

Up to £40 in bonus funds

Mark Walford is re-focusing on next year with Magical Max after the useful juvenile suffered a season-ending setback.

The Coach House gelding had looked smart in winning at York and Thirsk, prompting Walford to look towards a possible Group race raid in France and a big sales race target in the autumn.

However, those aspirations are now on hold -and the Sheriff Hutton trainer is biding his time for 2020.

He said: “We had a bit of a setback – nothing too serious, but he’s not going to run again this year.

“I know he’s won twice, but I never really thought he was a two-year-old type – he’s just a bit leggy.”

Longer-term ambitions therefore remain in place.

Walford added: “We’ll look to next year now.

“He got a rating of 84, so he’ll probably start in a handicap and then hopefully we’ll go from there.

“We had been looking at a sales race for him, but sadly it wasn’t to be.”
