George Margarson will continue to aim high with high-class maiden Ropey Guest after earmarking Newmarket’s Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes as the colt’s next target.

The Newmarket trainer believes a step up to a mile in the Group Two contest on September 28 can bring about more improvement from the son of Cable Bay.

As well as finishing a close-up sixth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the John Guest Racing-owned colt has run a number of other notable races in defeat – including on his most recent start when finishing third behind the smart-looking Valdermoro in the Acomb at York last week.

Margarson said: “He is still a maiden, so he has got options. But I’d like to go for the Royal Lodge, because the step up to the mile will be good for him.

“I was very pleased with him at York – he finished the race off well.

“He got caught a little bit wide on the bend, and he was a bit far back, but apart from that it was a good run.”
