Rose Dobbin’s emergence from a tough period continued apace at Newcastle with Rath An Iuir looking a nice prospect under Conor O’Farrell when winning the Sky Sports Racing On Sky Channel 415 Novices’ Hurdle.

Dobbin’s problems last season were well publicised – but she is back among the winners this term, with the former point-to-pointer her eighth of the season and a Borders National already secured through Bigirononhiship.

Bought for £100,000, Rath An Iuir (3-1) ran a nice race on his debut at Ayr when fourth, but just got caught flat-footed three flights from home this time.

At that point the coast looked clear for Jonjo O’Neill’s 11-10 favourite Orrisdale to come and claim the race, but O’Farrell gave his mount time to find his feet and the further he went the better he looked, powering to a five-length win.

“He’s a nice type and I’m really chuffed with that performance because it looked like a good race to me,” said Dobbin.

“They went a very strong gallop – he’s not the quickest at home, but his jumping kept him in it, he was so quick through the air and he stays very well.

“Conor said it rode like a good race and I think it was a good performance, I’m over the moon.”

She added: “I think we’ll be looking to go three miles next time, possibly the Albert Bartlett trial at Haydock which we won with Jonniesofa a few years ago. You’d have to hope he’d be up to something like that later in the season.

“He’s been a bit of a labour of love. We bought him two years ago, but the first year he was very weak and last season was very problematic, he wasn’t very sound, so it’s lovely when patience pays off.

“Hopefully we can keep him sound now.”

Another nice performance on the card came from Dali Mail (8-1) in the Spa At Ramside Hall Novices’ Chase.

Making his chasing debut, the Donald Whillans-trained and Callum Whillans-ridden winner quickened up smartly to beat I’m To Blame by a length and a half.
