No inspection is planned for Saturday’s card at Sandown, which features the 888Sport Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase.

The course has been hit by keen frosts and snow this week, but clerk of the course Andrew Cooper is reasonably confident the meeting will go ahead.

He said: “I don’t think we’ll need an inspection, the snow has all gone and we are expecting a night at or near zero.

“You can find the odd forecast that says it will be colder, yet there are some which will say warmer.

“The reality is we are all here first thing and if there are any issues, we can all kick into play in the morning. But from the balance of the forecasts, we’ll take a chance and see what happens overnight.

“That’s not to say it’s out of the question as if the night is much colder than anticipated, we could have a look in the morning, but hopefully we have cause to think it will be thumbs up pretty sharpish in the morning.

“From where we were 48 hours ago, we’re pleased, but we felt then it wasn’t a lost cause as it was a long way out.”
