Fran Berry expects to be sidelined for about six weeks with back injuries following his fall at Wolverhampton.

The Irish-born jockey was taken to New Cross Hospital on Tuesday night after being unshipped from Bamako Du Chatelet in a nasty-looking incident around two and a half furlongs from home in the Betway Live Casino Handicap.

“He’s got fractures in his vertebrae and he’s damaged a couple of ribs as well,” said his agent Gareth Owen.

“They don’t think there is any surgery required. It’s just a case of rest for a while. He’ll be about six weeks out.

“He was due to leave hospital and go home when they’ve sorted out what support they have to give to his back.

“It could have been a lot worse. Luckily, there were no head injuries. Fingers crossed he’ll mend quickly and be back in action as soon as he can.”

Berry himself gave an update on his condition on Twitter.

He wrote: “Feeling a bit rough after 2 days on my back, lots of morphine a help.

“Thankfully everything is moving, Scans on my spinal fractures are positive, if all goes well tomorrow with my great medical team, I hope to he home over the weekend. Very Lucky.”
