Dan Skelton is planning to step Mohaayed up in class this month for the The New One Unibet Hurdle Race at Haydock.

Winner of the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, Mohaayed defied near top-weight to land another big pot at Ascot recently in the Betfair Exchange Trophy.

With a rating of 153, Skelton feels it is worth a crack at the Grade Two on January 19, which is registered as the Champion Hurdle Trial but has been renamed in honour of Nigel Twiston-Davies’ four-time winner.

“Mohaayed, all being well, will go to Haydock for the Champion Hurdle Trial,” he said.

“I don’t want to be taking on Buveur D’Air, and it is likely to be too soft for Verdana Blue at Haydock.

“He won the Betfair Exchange Trophy off 11st 10lb at Ascot – and he is maybe one of those horses that goes well in handicaps regardless of what weight he has, and it might be that a step up to Grade One could be a step too far.

“Outside of Buveur D’Air and Verdana Blue, he looks like he is in the mix with the other British Champion Hurdle contenders.

“He will have an entry in the Champion Hurdle, because he could be the type of horse to place in one.”
