Chris Gordon is looking forward to chasing Cheltenham Festival glory with Highway One O One in the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase.
The Winchester trainer will aim his seven-year-old at the extended two-and-a-half-mile Listed prize after he finished second over course and distance on Saturday.
Gordon said: “It was a cracking run off 143, and he has only been put up two pounds to 145 – which will leave us on top weight for the Close Brothers – but it is a great race to go for.
“He just seemed to improve a little bit for that step up in trip. He has been a great horse for us this season and has won over 50,000 for us this season. He will go to Cheltenham with a live chance.”
Gordon had been cautious about moving up in trip.
He added: “Tom (Cannon) always said he feels like he stays in his races, but I was keen to stay around two miles for as long as we could if he was effective and we could win races.
“When we did step him up I was keen to do it at Cheltenham to see if it was worth going back.
“He just felt on Saturday that he should have kicked a little bit earlier – but we can do that next time.
“He jumps very well for a novice, and if he can get out there and bowl along in front we will just keep our fingers crossed for a great day.”
