Last year’s runner-up Spanish City will bid to go one better in the bet365 Bunbury Cup at Newmarket.
Roger Varian’s six-year-old went down by half a length to Burnt Sugar 12 months ago.
Spanish City has failed to win since, but he has been so consistent that he returns off a 5lb higher mark on Saturday.
“I think he is in good form. I think he will run a big race in the Bunbury Cup,” said Varian.
“He was a touch unlucky in it last year. I hope that rain stays away, because he wouldn’t want loose or soft ground.”
If conditions remain in the gelding’s favour, Varian is optimistic about his weekend chances.
“I’d see him running well,” added the Newmarket trainer.
“I think he is probably versatile. He didn’t do quite what I thought he would last time over six, when he was third behind our other horse Flavius Titus.
“I ran him back a week after his previous run, and I’m not sure he backs up so well, so it might have taken the edge of him.”
Mark Johnston’s Cardsharp and Dean Ivory’s Flaming Spear are at the head of the weights, with 50 still in contention – including Burnt Sugar.
