Spartan Fighter is likely to head back to York for the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes.
Having beaten subsequent Royal Ascot hero A’Ali when opening his account at Ripon last month, Declan Carroll’s juvenile was unsurprisingly a warm order to follow up at York on Saturday.
While his performance was not visually impressive, the Dutch Art colt got the job done, and Carroll is looking forward to seeing his youngster step up in class – potentially in the Group Two Gimcrack on August 23.
“He’s come out of it fine, and we were very happy with him,” said the Norton-based trainer.
“He’s a good horse in his own right. The ground was probably a little bit quick for him on the day – I’d say he’ll definitely be a better horse when there’s a bit of juice in the ground.
“He’s still green and he’s not the type of horse that will go and win by four or five lengths at this stage of his career. I think he’d be better in a bigger field when he’d have something to drag him into the race.”
He is likely to have the opportunity to prove that soon.
Carroll added: “He won’t be run before the Gimcrack anyway – that will probably be his next race.
“He’s a work in progress, but he’s going the right way. He was a late foal, so we’re not in any great rush with him.”
