Richard Johnson will take stock on Monday morning whether to resume riding on Tuesday after hurting muscles in his back in a fall at Newbury on Saturday.

The champion jockey landed awkwardly on his back when taking a tumble from Tapaculo at the final flight when beaten in a handicap hurdle over two and a half miles.

He gave up his remaining rides and missed out on a winner, Crooks Peak, for Philip Hobbs.

Johnson decided to rest on Sunday, although his only scheduled mount, Jimmy The Digger, was a non-runner at Huntingdon, and will sit out Monday, too.

“I’m OK, just a bit sore. I’ve hurt my muscles in my back, it’s not too bad,” said Johnson.

“I’m not riding on Monday and we’ll take a view in the morning whether I can ride on Tuesday. I’ll give it another 24 hours and make a bit more of a plan.

“I landed on my back and it was just very sore, it was very tender. It’s nothing too serious, just stiff and sore.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can. I just landed awkwardly more than anything else. I didn’t get kicked or anything.

“I aggravated my back. I’ve just got to let it settle a bit and see what the physio says.”
