Gary Moore has warned BetVictor Gold Cup winner Baron Alco is likely to miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a small setback.
The eight-year-old picked up the problem while preparing for what would have been his first attempt at three miles in last month’s Grade Three 888Sport Handicap Chase at Kempton.
The John Stone-owned gelding has not run since finishing fourth in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham in December.
Moore said: “Baron Alco has got a little injury. Unfortunately it was too close to the race at Kempton. He is unlikely to run again this season.
“We were looking forward to running over three miles for the first time at Kempton.
“I would say that we will be definitely trying him over three miles at some point next season.”
The Lower Beeding handler also confirmed Grade Two winner Benatar will not be taking up engagements in the Ultima Handicap Chase or the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate at next week’s Cheltenham Festival.
He added: “Benatar won’t run at the Festival. We have just decided not to go there, and we will now probably rest him for the remainder of the season.
“A few have been frustrating this season, but he has probably been the biggest of them all.”
