Denis O’Regan feels Snugsborough Benny would have a live chance if given the green light to run in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National.

The Liam Cusack-trained nine-year-old bounced back to winning ways with an emphatic victory at Fairyhouse last month and is one of 110 entries for the Easter Monday showpiece back at the Ratoath circuit on April 22.

Snugsborough Benny is currently 37th in the order of entry on 10st 9lb and O’Regan believes he could be a big player.

He said: “He looks to have a lovely weight off 10st 9lb. If he (Cusack) decides to run him he looks like a horse that could be very competitive in a race like that.

“He won the Galway Blazers impressively enough and was running a blinder in the Paddy Power at Christmas (when he unseated O’Regan).

“Obviously he won very well in a rated race at Fairyhouse the last day and the form has worked out well.

“He’s been a slow horse to progress and the last day in Fairyhouse was the best he’s felt yet. He’s obviously an improving horse.

“I always felt that going out in trip he’d be a better horse again.”

He added: “Being able to ride him cold would be difficult in a big race, but when he’s on his A-game he’s a good horse.

“I wouldn’t say he’d run though if it turned up heavy.”
