Newspaperofrecord suffered a shock defeat on her return in the Grade Three Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs on Friday.
Chad Brown’s charge heads the ante-post market for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot after running out a six-and-three-quarter-length winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf last November.
That win took her unbeaten record to three races and the Lope De Vega filly was expected to add to that tally as she made her seasonal bow over an extended mile.
Newspaperofrecord broke smartly under Irad Ortiz and was soon bowling along in front, appearing to have the race under control turning for home.
However, Concrete Rose emerged from the pack and began to hunt down the hot favourite, who had no response when passed and had to settle for second.
Brown felt his charge lacked for fitness on her return and had tired in the closing stages.
He said: “She just wasn’t fit enough today. Irad said she was a little keen early on turf – it looks pretty soft – and she set some strong fractions. I was a little concerned. She just ran out of gas the last part of it.
“Hopefully, she gets a lot out of this race. It’s unfortunate she’s no longer undefeated, but we’ll have to go on. We have a really good horse. We’ll have to see what we’ll do with her next.”
Ortiz added: “She broke extra sharp today and I took a big hold on her. I was really holding her. Then at the end she tried, but she just got beat today.”
