Last year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Romanised is on target for the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday week.

Ken Condon’s son of Holy Roman Emperor failed to reproduce his Classic form last summer, but he made a pleasing reappearance at Naas in the Gladness Stakes.

Racing over an inadequate seven furlongs and carrying a 5lb penalty for his Guineas win, Romanised was beaten less than two lengths by Dermot Weld’s Imaging.

“I was delighted with him. Apart from winning, it was just what we needed, he didn’t have a hard race and he came out of it bouncing,” said Condon.

“His work last Tuesday was excellent, so it’s all systems go for the Lockinge. It was a good performance under a penalty and seven furlongs would have been a bit sharp for him.

“He’s in very good form and we’re looking forward to next week. Hopefully the ground will be nice, we want good ground for him – fastish ground.

“I think it will be a big field. Le Brivido is one of the favourites and we finished upsides him at Naas, so I’m looking forward to it.”
