Newspaperofrecord, the star US filly who was a spectacular winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last year, will not travel to Royal Ascot next month.

Her trainer Chad Brown has let Ascot racecourse know that the filly will be taken out of the Coronation Stakes, for which she was favourite.

Brown has decided that her shock defeat at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby weekend was not the right preparation for a major assignment overseas.

Having ended an unbeaten two-year-old season with a six-and-three-quarter-length romp at the Breeders’ Cup, Newspaperofrecord was sent off a 1-5 favourite to extend her winning streak to four in the Grade Three Edgewood Stakes, her supposed prep race for a run at Royal Ascot.

But she was beaten nearly four lengths by Concrete Rose, with Brown subsequently conceding he did not have her fit enough to win first time out.

Having pencilled in another race early next month in New York for the filly, he has now decided to abandon an Ascot trip.

The news is a bitter blow to Royal Ascot officials who have worked hard to lure Brown, the outstanding trainer of turf horses in the US, back to Britain for the first time in seven years.

Newspaperofrecord, bred by Wigan businessman Allan Belshaw, appeared the ideal candidate.

Nick Smith, Ascot’s director of racing and communications, said: “It was good of Chad Brown to show so much enthusiasm and commitment to the project from her win in the Breeders’ Cup and to see that backed up with an entry in the Coronation Stakes.

“It’s very disappointing for all that the prep race didn’t give them the confidence to carry on.”

Smith added: “The NYRA (New York Racing Association) have also added the lucrative new Turf Tiara to their programme, and it’s understandable that this has appeal to the top US turf horses.”
