Charlie Fellowes enjoyed something of a red-letter day after I Am Magical completed his first across-the-card double from his new Bedford House Stables base at Newmarket on Thursday.

Having claimed the last at York with Carnwennan, the Newmarket handler, who sent out his final runners from St Gatien Stables on Monday, was soon celebrating more success after the 6-1 shot finished strongly to take the Heath Court Hotel Fillies’ Handicap by a length.

Fellowes said: “To have two of my first three runners win since moving win to Bedford House is a great start.

“I Am Magical is quite a nice filly and she just got stuck in the mud at bit at Haydock last time out. I thought the better ground would suit her. I was a little bit worried about the track, as she is quite a big filly and I didn’t know how well she would handle the dip.

“She was purchased as a breeding prospect and hopefully we can make our way through the grades.”

Dean Ivory was not as surprised as most when Dancinginthewoods became his first two-year-old winner of the year, defying his 50-1 starting price to take the Heath Court Hotel Employee Award Novice Auction Stakes by a short head.

Ivory said: “He is a nice horse and at home he has been working really well. I thought the ground might be a bit too firm.

“Joey Haynes rides him out and knows him and that can make a lot of difference to a horse first time out. He gave him a lovely ride. He went through with it nicely when he hit the rising ground.

“He will get a bit further later on, but he has got a bit of speed. We will just take our time with him.”

Manana Chica (16-1) showed she was not there just to make up the numbers when striking by half a length at the third time of asking in the Newmarket Journal Racing Ahead Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

Winning rider Hector Crouch said: “It was a little bit of a surprise, but she ran a really nice race at Salisbury last time out.

“They went pretty steady and I had her in a lovely position tracking the leader. She quickened up down the dip well and liked the ground. It certainly read like a nice race on paper.”
