Michael Bell intends to prepare Eagles By Day for a Royal Ascot engagement, after ruling him out of the Investec Derby.
The Newmarket handler will aim the son of Sea The Stars at either the King Edward VII Stakes or the Queen’s Vase at next month’s Royal meeting.
After bolting up in a maiden at Salisbury on his penultimate start, Eagles By Day found the soft ground against him last time out in the Derby Trial at Lingfield.
Bell said: “I am hoping his last run was down to the ground. He travelled very well into the race, but he couldn’t accelerate out of that soft ground.
“I think he will reappear in either the King Edward VII Stakes or the Queen’s Vase.
“He is a nice horse. If you look at his pedigree, it is very good – and he is not fully there yet, either.
“There is no point going to Epsom unless you are going to get involved at the business end, because it can ruin a horse for the rest of the year. Going to Ascot gives us a nice break.”
