Ubettabelieveit looked a smart juvenile sprinter when taking Listed honours for trainer Nigel Tinkler in the National Stakes at Sandown.

An emphatic winner on his second start at Doncaster, the son of Kodiac travelled smoothly for Oisin Murphy right from the start.

Deliver The Dream and Eye Of Heaven made the early running with Wings Of A Dove the first to make her challenge.

Ubettabelieveit (13-8) came with his run on the outside and hit the front inside the final furlong to score by a length and a half from Wings Of A Dove.

Mcmanaman was third with 11-10 favourite Eye Of Heaven fading out of contention to be last of the six runners in this five-furlong heat usually held in late May.

Tinkler said: “He was probably travelling nearly too well. He got there a little bit too soon, but I’m very happy. It’s nice to get a Listed winner at Sandown.

“His sectional times for his last race were quite quick. Those last two furlongs were pretty good. I think he’s going to get a fair handicap mark so we had to come, but it might have not be the best National Stakes we’ve had.

“He was kept wide a bit which wasn’t to our advantage. Things didn’t quite go to plan, but we’re more than happy with the result.”

Tinkler will to keep Ubettabelieveit to the minimum trip for the Roses Stakes, another Listed contest, at York next month.

“I think he’ll probably go for the Roses at York. I would think that would be his next race,” said the North Yorkshire trainer.

“The Flying Childers (at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting in September) would be a definite possibility. Had it been six furlongs today, we’d have been too keen. He probably would get six. He needs a gallop. I’ll speak to Oisin and see what he thinks.”

Murphy was happy with the outcome, although the race did not go to plan.

He said: “I would have liked to have been behind Frankie (Dettori on Eye Of Heaven) for another furlong at least. We got racing a bit soon. With a small field it was hard to get cover. I think my fella would have won impressively if I had been able to ride him the way I wanted to.

“I won on him at Doncaster and during lockdown I had a sit on him as well, so I know the horse pretty well.

“I’ll have a chat with Nigel about where he goes next as I’d love to keep riding the horse.”
