First-season trainer James Ferguson is hoping Francesco Guardi can kick-start his career after the Frankel colt made a winning debut at Salisbury.

Francesco Guardi is bred in the purple – his dam, Trophee, is a half-sister to dual Arc heroine Treve – and duly delivered in a novice stakes over seven furlongs, though he left it late.

The Newmarket handler was delighted to see his charge get the hang of racing and finish with a flourish to beat the previously experienced Lost In Space by a head.

“Kieren Fallon rides him in his work and has liked him,” said Ferguson.

“We took him to Salisbury for his education and you could see the penny drop in the final furlong.

“He’s had an easy time since he ran and we won’t do much with him for a couple of weeks.

“It’s early days, but he looks a nice prospect, fingers crossed. When you’re a first-season trainer like I am, you need a horse to get you noticed.”
