France’s best two-year-old Sealiway is realising a dream for 26-year-old Pauline Chehboub, who will experience racing in the United States for the first time when he lines up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

With none of France’s best known stables represented at the championships, it falls on the impressive Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner, owned by the Chehboub family’s Haras de la Gousserie and breeder Guy Pariente, to lead his nation’s challenge.

Sealiway, who is trained in Marseille, will be the first runner to race in the US for his French Classic-winning handler Frederic Rossi, who has helped establish his owners as a rising force.

The son of first season sire Galiway has won four of his six starts and routed his rivals at Longchamp last month when beating Nando Parrado by eight lengths to register his owners’ first Group One victory in France.

“It was incredible to win in such style,” said Chehboub.

“We were so happy and now the story continues with the invitation to the Breeders’ Cup. We will try to do our best. We know he is a really good horse. He will stay a mile and more. To be at the Breeders’ Cup with this horse is a very good experience, a dream come true.”

Haras de la Gousserie was bought by Kamel Chehboub, with brother Bouzid, after Spirit One carried their colours to victory in the 2008 Arlington Million. They now have 100 horses for breeding and racing which are managed by Pauline, daughter of Kamel, with this year’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Rossi as principal trainer.

Sealiway has contributed to a tally of 23 winners this year in France, where Rougir and Stunning Spirit have also won at Group level.

“I was French champion at pony showjumping and after I tried polo, which was fun,” said Chehboub. “Finally I stopped and found my passion in horse racing with my father. It’s a new adventure.

“I work with my father in commercial property in Marseille. We also have the stud and I am the racing manager. I have given a lot of time to the stud for the last three years. We have 30 horses in training, but now with the breeding we have 100 altogether.

“I was too young to be with my father at the Arlington Million. Going to the Breeders’ Cup is a new adventure. It’s my first time.”

She continued: “Frederic is a very talented trainer. He had a lot of success for Jean-Claude Seroul as his private trainer, but for the last three years he has been a public trainer and we started working with him since then.

“We have a lot of success with him. We made a lot of investment at the Arqana Sales and finally it is paying off. This year we bought 15 yearlings and we have some good prospects for next year that will be three-year-olds.”

Sealiway’s emphatic triumph on Arc weekend, under his Breeders’ Cup jockey Mickael Barzalona was not a surprise.

Chehboub said: “To be honest it wasn’t a surprise, because when he was a yearling and came into training, he was just too good for everything. It was all so easy. With his trainer we had never seen that before.

“He’s won all his races on softish ground and I think it will be good at Keeneland, but we are under no pressure because he is the best two-year-old in France. We will see now what he can do against the Americans and good English and Irish horses.”
