Upon Tweed has been described as a horse who “could be anything”, with Nicky Richards hoping his patience can be rewarded next season.
The exciting six-year-old is unbeaten in three starts under rules, winning both hurdling outings handsomely in the autumn before a setback saw the Greystoke handler exercise caution and pull stumps for the season.
Richards – who passed 1,000 career winners at Newcastle recently – is now looking ahead to next season, where the tantalising prospect of a novice chasing campaign could be on the agenda for Upon Tweed, who runs in the colours of long-time supporter Eddie Melville.
“He picked up a slight injury after his second win at Ayr and we decided to put him away and give him time,” said Richards.
“Hopefully he comes back and repays Eddie’s patience, I really think he could be anything.
“He won’t run again until next season and he will jump a fence at some stage, he could be a proper chaser in the future.
“We’ll school him in the autumn and see how that goes and if we feel we can go that route then novice chasing will be no bother at all.”
