James Owen has ambitions of Wimbledon Hawkeye getting him off the mark at Royal Ascot after handing his star performer a Hardwicke Stakes goal.
The son of Kameko has excelled as both a juvenile and during his Classic season for the Newmarket handler, winning the Royal Lodge at two and then gaining the victory some fine efforts in top company deserved last term when striking in the Nashville Derby at Kentucky Downs.
Now sights are set on the biggest meeting of the season and one Wimbledon Hawkeye was an honourable fourth at last year.
Owen said: “The first aim will be the Hardwicke and we just need to decide whether we go straight to Royal Ascot or have a prep run beforehand.
“He’s had a nice break after a busy campaign last year and I’m really looking forward to this season with him.
“Each year he has put me on the map and hopefully can continue to do that.”
Wimbledon Hawkeye’s appearance at the Royal meeting could then determine what the future holds for the four-year-old who, having finished last term at the Breeders’ Cup, has the option of further international adventures.
Owen added: “That will pave the way to whether we go abroad with him again or if it all clicks we could stay here and look at some nice targets closer to home.”
