‘It is how she has done physically that is the really exciting thing’.

With spring in the air, dreams are alive that Awaken could follow in the footsteps of Cachet when she puts Classic aspirations to the test in the early part of the season.

Like the former 1000 Guineas heroine – who was subsequently only a head away from doubling up in the French equivalent at ParisLongchamp – Awaken is trained by George Boughey and owned by Highclere Thoroughbreds.

Awaken brings a strong book of juvenile form to the table, but it is her progress over the winter months that is inspiring lofty ambitions from her connections, with the daughter of Mehmas likely to follow the Cachet route and begin her Classic season at Newmarket in the Nell Gwynn on April 15.

“We’ve probably got as strong a group of horses as we’ve had for a while and Awaken is a very important horse for us this season,” said Highclere’s Harry Herbert.

“She was a very good two-year-old filly and has done very well physically – she’s transformed over the winter months.

“All being well she will go to the Nell Gwyn or the Fred Darling at Newbury, but I think George is probably favouring Newmarket.

“She was fourth in the Rockfel on her final start and ran a very good race, but she was very weak last year. She was placed behind Venetian Sun at Royal Ascot and she’s a really important filly, but it is how she has done physically that is the really exciting thing.”
