Expert Analysis
Recent winners of this have been pretty good, including Alenquer 12 months before, but there was a rather disappointing turnout this time and Changingoftheguard probably did not have to be at his best to prevail only narrowly. He ensured a true pace, though, after the opening furlong or two at least, coming home in a near-to-par 98.5% finishing speed.
CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD (108 here, 113 previously) probably did not need to be quite at his best to prevail by the skin of his teeth, making all and soon going a good pace, pushed along soon after halfway and under stronger pressure turning in, seemingly headed for a few strides in the final 1f but sticking to his task better than the second and in front again when it mattered. He is likely to be suited by 14f.
GRAND ALLIANCE (108 here, 100 previously) ran his best race in a first-time visor while losing a race he really should have won, slowly away and coming from behind to challenge out wide in the closing stages, perhaps in front for a few strides, but hanging left and handing the initiative back to the winner close home. He will stay further still.
LYSANDER (101 here and previously) ran creditably but is not up to winning at Group 2 level at this early stage of his career, unable to quicken and likely to get still further.
OTTOMAN FLEET (101 here and previously) shaped a bit better than the result in running creditably, travelling well but inexperienced when push came to shove and one paced. In contrast to the three who beat him, he looked as if he would be effective back at a bit shorter.
DARK MOON RISING (90 here, 103 previously) seemed not to stay, close up for a long way, though his form leaves him a bit to find in Group 2s anyway.
SAVVY VICTORY (79 here, 98 previously) had plenty on but may not truly stay a well-run 12f in any case.
