Verdict

DR T J ECKLEBURG won this last year for Evan Williams and showed signs of a return to his best when a five-length third at Sandown off this mark last month. Rated 5lb higher last season, he looks to have every chance of retaining his crown under Conor Ring. Jaipaletemps failed in his hat-trick bid after a bad mistake at Uttoxeter but would be a player again with a clear round, though Martator was going well before unseating at Sandown and could prove the biggest danger.

Expert View Verdict

These useful experienced chasers do tend to have quite erratic form and this race is far from the penalty kick the betting might suggest. DR T J ECKLEBURG is the obvious selection having been in solid form since fitted with cheekpieces and perhaps having been set too much to do by his regular jockey last time at Sandown. He should run a bit better than that form here and hopefully that will be enough. Jaipaletemps is a danger if a very disappointing effort last time is ignored based on him running just seven days after his previous start, which he won. He had won four of his last five at that stage and is likely to bounce back and be a big threat. Less predictable is Harper's Brook who looked to have found his mojo after a longer period of poor form on his penultimate run only to run a touch disappointingly last time. He remains dangerous.
