Verdict
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS ran a fine race in defeat here at Christmas and can land a remarkable fourth success in this race. The 10-year-old led two from home in the Savills Chase but couldn't sustain his effort, getting headed before the final fence. He has displayed a stunning finishing kick in the closing stages here in the past and he can give another masterclass at this venue. Affordale Fury really blossomed in the aforementioned contest and may well have to more to offer. Spindleberry is unbeaten over fences and it will be fascinating to see how she measures up, while Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin will be expected to perform better after a couple of below-par efforts.
Expert View Verdict
The Savills Chase over C&D looks the best place to start here. It was won by Affordale Fury who isn't fully exposed at the top level over fences but he did get first run that day and may struggle on the much softer ground here. Former National winner I Am Maximus was arguably a bit unlucky that day after being hampered late and he should go well if in the same form here though he is another who has produced his best efforts on a quicker surface. The same can be said for Grangeclare West who wasn't beaten far and was unlucky not to be a fair bit closer having been hampered early. He has an excellent record here so can't be dismissed though the Grand National may be the target given he was unlucky in the race last year. GALOPIN DES CHAMPS ran a huge race on his seasonal return as he wasn't best placed to challenge but travelled smoothly until his fitness gave way. Though he lost his unbeaten record here the dual Gold Cup winner proved he retained most of his ability and could turn the tables on this softer ground. His stablemate Gaelic Warrior was only narrowly denied in the King George last time and the talented but quirky 5 time Grade 1 winner could prove his biggest danger if his stamina holds up. That is a concern at this stiffer track on testing ground as it will be for another stablemate Fact To File. The runaway Ryanair winner is top class at his best but needs to bounce back from his Kempton disappointment where he was let down by his jumping.
