Very good bumper performer. Didn't quite live up to expectations over hurdles last season but back on track with impressive chase debut success at Naas. Fell early in Leopardstown Grade 1 since.
He has won two NH flat races, a chase and a point-to-point from 2m to 3m on soft and yielding ground. Fell at the 3rd when 11-4 in the Group 1 Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown over 2m 1f (yielding) in a Grade 1 chase won by Franco De Port in December last year on his latest outing.

Exciting prospect who bolted up on his Gowran hurdle debut in March and did likewise when switched to fences at the same venue on his return in November. Could be really good.
He has won a hurdle race, a NH flat race, a chase and a point-to-point from 2m to 3m on ground varying from good to soft - heavy. Won on his latest outing in a chase when 8-13fav at Gowran Park over 2m 4f (heavy) in November last year, beating Fort Worth Texas by 18l.

Verdict
Connections seem to have CAPTAIN GUINNESS' heart issue under control and he was good when winning at Punchestown last month. The Arakan gelding showed a high level of ability over timber as a novice. He was Grade 2 placed and was also in with a shout when brought down two from home in the Supreme Novices' at Cheltenham. He looks to have the potential to be a top class performer over fences this term if staying healthy. Energumene was impressive on his chase debut at Gowran in November and is still in the 'could be anything' category so has to rate as a big danger. This is a significant step up now though and he will be tested more. His stablemate Blackbow is another to consider. He comes here after an early fall in Grade 1 company at Leopardstown over Christmas. The Stowaway gelding had been good on his chase debut at Navan previously and has a big engine when things go right.
Verdict
ENERGUMENE looked potentially high class when hacking up on his Gowran chase debut and it's perhaps significant that Paul Townend is on him rather than Blackbow given that that one was sent off second favourite for a Leopardstown Grade 1 over Christmas only to depart early. Captain Guinness is another fascinating contender in this very strong novice chase.
