Expert Analysis
The Super Sprint was another race won in a quick time at Newbury on Saturday, the fastest since the 2013 renewal and quicker than every other since 2006. A race dominated by those drawn high, as double-figure stall numbers filled the first six places. They were a mix of middle and centre though as the field spread right across the track, with the group on the far side seemingly inconvenienced.
ZIGAZIG AH maintained her unbeaten record on turf here, taking a notable step forward from her Yarmouth win three weeks ago. Initially racing in the middle, she edged over towards the near side group before settling down for a protracted battle with Angels Lane and Final Appeal. She edged it by a nose, needing every inch of this trip.
ANGELS LANE hit the front on the near side inside the penultimate furlong and looked like she was going to hold on for much of the final furlong before being chinned on the line. She travelled powerfully in the early stages and that probably told late on. This was just her second career start so will almost certainly improve, but I would be keeping her at the minimum distance.
FINAL APPEAL was only third despite being beaten just a head. He was always on the pace up the centre of the track, possibly leading overall with two furlongs left to run. While he was conceding weight here, this was his fourth start, and he might be open to less improvement than some of the others.
ETIENNE might be the one to take out of this. A maiden, having just his second start (sent off 7/2 favourite), he came from slightly further back and had to switch before producing a powerful finishing effort. His final furlong was the quickest of all and he hit the line hard, suggesting he will benefit from an extra furlong in the future.
SKY SECRET was on the pace towards the near side from stall 14. He travelled well but wasn’t quite able to sustain his effort from outside the furlong pole and faded late on. It was a decent effort under 9st though.
VOLLERING was quick into stride on the near side rail but had to be nudged to hold her position after halfway and faded outside the furlong pole. Her form is just starting to look like it has levelled off.
SEED YA LATER is worthy of notable mention, faring best of those drawn low. She also came from the rear in a race where those prominent throughout dominated.
WAIT GEORDIE raced in the centre from his draw in stall 8 and was in a good position at halfway. He couldn’t go with the leaders in the final two furlongs though.
BINT ARCHANGE was below the level of her Sandown listed success here. Close enough at halfway, she faded in the final two furlongs.
SEATHEGULLS had little chance on form, but probably fared better than expected to finish tenth, staying on in the closing stages.
ROLLTHEDICEBABY was prominent on the far side but weakened outside the furlong pole.
BILL THE BULL led the far side group initially but was unable to sustain his effort inside the penultimate furlong.
HOLI SCARLETT raced in midfield on the near side but never really produced a challenge.
PAST PASSION was prominent on the far side, but looked under pressure from halfway and weakened soon after.
CALL ME TOMORROW raced up the centre, but more towards the far side from stall 9 and never got involved.
NASCENT STAR was held up on the near side rail but failed to make any real inroads before staying on a bit late on.
NIEWIADOMA was held up near side and didn’t have the clearest of runs but was struggling anyway.
LEUCOTHEA was held up on the far side and never landed a blow.
KODI BEAR LIGHT tracked the leaders near side but was beaten early in the contest.
MINSTER BOY was another on the far side that never got involved at any stage.
HOLLIESTHEDOLLIE was always off the pace on the near side.
BALLISTY was badly outpaced early last at halfway and although he didn’t pick up many places, he stayed on to some extent in the final furlong.
FROM ME TO YOU went far side from 10 and was soon beaten, weakening from halfway.
COURAGE BEST was never involved on the near side.
