Expert Analysis
The speedsters were out on Friday in the Group 1 over the minimum and despite the ground, this was certainly a speed test through the early part of the race. Bacio flew the lids and was a over a length in front after a 13.00 seconds opening furlong, pretty rapid from a standing start. He followed that with his quickest furlong of the race, before starting to slow from halfway. The closers couldn’t get to him though as they all felt the pinch late on too and he held on to win by a length and a quarter. Those that fought out the finish all raced more towards the far side, following the pace from Bacio in stall 5.
BACIO had taken apart a Royal Ascot handicap on his only previous start on these shores and he did similar, if not as devastating on the eye, against Group 1 opposition here. They just couldn’t go with him early and those that tried to do so paid the price late on with Night Raider and American Affair finishing down the field. Just a three-year-old, and likely to have been inconvenienced by the slower ground, he looks like a sprinter that could potentially dominate here if connections want.
STARLUST produced his best effort in some time here, bouncing back to form at a track he likes. He raced in midfield early, before switching around American Affair as that rival started to struggle. He saw it out well enough and just held the late thrust of Rumstar to finish second.
RUMSTAR was taken off his feet a little early and was shuffled back through the field. As a result, he found himself nearly last with two furlongs left to run, but he stayed on better than most here. He was helped by a clear run considering where he came from. A stiff five furlong probably suits him better, but this was a good effort.
TIME FOR SANDALS appeared like the possible unlucky one. She stayed towards the near side for a while from her high draw, eventually working her way across in an attempt to get some daylight. She was stopped in her run a couple of times and when she eventually got clear in the final furlong, she rattled home to finish a never nearer fourth. How much she was inconvenienced we will never know, but she shaped like the second-best horse in the race, at least.
RAYEVKA was second in the Group 1 at Royal Ascot when last seen and ran with credit again here. If Time For Sandals was unlucky, Rayevka was certainly inconvenienced. She had to wait towards the far side and when she initially got a gap Rumstar took her line. She then had to squeeze between rivals late on, and while she wouldn’t have won she deserves marking up slightly at the same time.
NIGHT RAIDER was prominent on the far side early on and stayed involved until after the furlong pole but faded in the final 100 yards or so.
JM JUNGLE raced closer to the near side form his draw in stall 16 and was probably inconvenienced. He went fast enough early on his side but couldn’t sustain it in the closing stages.
ASFOORA couldn’t build on her good run at Goodwood, despite going well for a long way here. The final furlong saw her fade away to finish eighth.
COVER UP raced in midfield and even though he looked under pressure quite early in the contest, he kept finding in the penultimate furlong before tiring a little near the finish.
HEAVENLY HEATHER was off the pace initially but stayed on without ever really threatening.
REDORANGE was drawn in 18 and never really got involved in the contest like many of those drawn very high.
AMERICAN AFFAIR race close to Bacio early, or as close as any of the field anyway. He couldn’t sustain it though and faded from outside the furlong pole.
AIN’T NOBODY never got into it on the far side. Held up early, he tried to challenge up the far rail but weakened in the closing stages.
PERSHAADA raced in the middle of the pack but weakened badly from the furlong pole.
PARTISAN HERO raced near side from stall 17 and couldn’t sustain his effort in the final two furlongs.
MISSION CENTRAL couldn’t produce a power-packed finish this time. Held up, he never really got into the contest on the far side before weakening a furlong out.
AZURE ANGEL was off the pace from an early stage and never picked up.
FITZELLA finished last of eighteen, weakening a long way out and eased.
