Christophe Ferland shot to fame in 2011 when he saddled Dabirsim to win the Prix Morny at Deauville, writes Liz Price.
He fondly remembers the great moments he enjoyed with Dabirsim, who remained unbeaten at two after adding the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere to his record at the end of the season.
“I train quite a few of his sons at the moment,” Ferland says. “But so far we are still looking for another Dabirsim. He was an extraordinary horse and it’s rare to find a great horse like him. Mind you, I have some two-year-olds who are going to run at Deauville in August for the first time and you never know what you might find.”
The 2019 season is going well though for the trainer who is based at the training centre of La Teste de Buch in the South West of France. He has about 100 horses in his boxes and is currently ranked eighth on the trainers’ list thanks to 44 victories.
Christophe Ferland is one of the trainers who always targets the Deauville meeting and has already a number of fillies, like Paramount, who was maybe just a little outclassed in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly, lined up for one of the Group races in August.
