MICK CHANNON has a long history of success in the two-year-old division with likes of Queen’s Logic, Zafeen, Flashy Wings, Silca’s Sister, Hatta Fort and Nijoom Dubai all major league victors for the West Ilsley-based trainer.
Channon is always likely to unearth a jewel amongst his juveniles and the last couple of years have seen him enjoy notable wins with Milltown Star (Listed) last season and Barbill who picked up over £132,000 when winning a valuable Sales race at the Curragh and a listed victory in 2018.
Channon still retains the boyish enthusiasm of rookie trainer despite being in his 21st season in his historic West Ilsley yard and, chomping at the bit awaiting for racing to resume, kindly spoke to Tony Elves about some of his two-year-old team who we can look forward to racing once the sport resumes.
Please note: Where a horse exists in the ATR database we have linked to its form and tracker profile below, we will update others when they become available.
Bay Colt; Twilight Son – Royal Ffanci
He is a half brother to that good filly Dan’s Dream that won the Fred Darling for us. He is very nice and hopefully will do well.
Bay Colt; Exceed And Excel – Lady Lahar
I think he is a very nice two-year-old with a lot of quality and was bought by Gill Richardson for 52,000gns out of Tattersalls Book 2. Everything has been thrown back a little bit but he will be a summer horse and I would have thought that he would be ready about June, July or August time. He is a very nice colt and I would have thought he would start over six furlongs.
Bay Colt; Sepoy – Sandreamer
He is a nice Sepoy colt out of a decent mare I used to train called Sandreamer. He is an early two-year-old who I think will be running the end of May/early June – he’s that type of horse. He shows a bit of speed and is a nice sort of horse. He will be five or six furlong horse.
Bay Filly; Swiss Spirit – Crazee Diamond
She is another very nice filly by Swiss Spirit out of Crazee Diamond. She is quite forward and won’t be really early but something for mid-Summer onwards.
Chestnut Filly; Le Havre – Coquet
She will be one for later in the year but she is one we like a lot. She will be out after Goodwood and is more of a backend filly. We will start her over six or seven furlongs and see how we go.
Bay Filly; Awtaad – Gallic Star
She is a very nice filly by Awtaad out of Gallic Star who has a lot of quality. She will be a six furlong type filly and she is a real big filly so she won’t be really early.
Brown Colt; Vadamos – Ballet of Doha
He is a nice horse by Vadamoss who was bought out of Tattersalls Book 3 for 10,000 gns. He will probably be better at six furlongs but he shows a fair amount of ability and he will be ready to go, hopefully, in June time.
Bay Filly; Kodiac – Zarafa
She will be a two-year-old and six furlongs and possibly a bit further. She goes very well and has done a couple of bits of work. She is a half sister to Opal Tiara who was a very good filly we trained and who won the Group 3 Supreme Stakes at Goodwood as a three-year-old.
