Husband and wife team Dan and Claire Kubler have enjoyed a purple patch in July, sending out five winners and a second from six runners in the space of just five days.
The first married couple in Britain to share a licence, they have an expanding team at their bespoke yard in Upper Lambourn, where they sent out their first winner in 2018 and train for an increasing portfolio of owners including Claire’s parents and eminent breeders Gary and Lesley Middlebrook.
Their best ever season numerically was 2022 when they saddled 26 winners but Dan expects to surpass that tally this year. “We’d like to get to 30 and have just 11 to go so we’re very much on track,” he says.
Both young trainers have a strong pedigree. Dan cut his teeth with top trainers Gai Waterhouse, Ben Cecil and Roger Charlton while Claire worked in the States for Patrick Gallagher before joining Jeremy Noseda.
“We share the responsibilities and work well as a team,” explains Dan. “Every Sunday we sit down and go through our list of horses, discussing each one’s development individually and making plans for them.
“Neither of us ride out. We have a good mix of experienced staff and enthusiastic young people to work the horses and feel we can focus much more effectively on training from the ground.”
