ED DE GILES didn’t have to spend anytime checking out his entries at Royal Ascot last week but you can only cut your suit according to your cloth and the Ledbury trainer has tailored victories from several unlikely sorts in his eight years with a licence.
Ed’s latest miracle act was when conjuring a win out of the 46 rated Coachella at Bath recently and proving that was no fluke when that horse was beaten only a head under a penalty at Brighton last week.
Of course with a stable full of 100 plus rated horse the balancing act becomes that much easier but his placing skills with lesser types and improving them begs the question what he would do should a higher rated individual come his way. Indeed he may well have some hidden in his stable, two obvious looking contenders could be Sexy Beast and Bombastic.
We only have to look back at his short career and see what was achieved with the likes of Kingsgate Choice,Frosty Berry and Lucy the Painter who all achieved ratings north of 100!
The season started slowly for de Giles but he now has 9 winners from 71 runners and the likelihood of several more in the offing with the likes of Bombero, Bombastic, Sexy Beast and Wind In My Sails who could be making waves at some of the more prestigious Flat venues.
He said: “It took us a bit of time to get rolling but I’m chuffed to bits with the form of the horses right now and long may it last.”
Ed kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can take him further forward as the season progresses.
