Two years ago this powerful gelding was winning an All-Weather handicap at Southwell off a mark of 75 for Ruth Carr but progressed up the rankings rapidly enough to take a valuable race at Ascot last October off a triple-digit rating for Team Camacho. He hasn’t hit those heights this season but posted an eye-catching run in defeat at Epsom on Derby Day.

Trainer says

He’s been below his best this year, but we’ve freshened him up and will take him back to his beloved Ascot, where he’s run some of his best races. There are three races there for him in the space of six weeks, including the Shergar Cup.

A six-year-old son of Zoffany, he has won three of his nine races on turf. Undeniably at his best in easy ground, he also demonstrated that he can be a force on the All-Weather when chasing home the smart Penzance in the valuable Easter Classic Trial over 10f at Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

Trainer says

He’s had a nice break and we’re very pleased with him. He’s a versatile horse who is effective over 10f or 1m4f, but we feel he is best suited by a stiff 10 with some juice in the ground as he showed us at Leicester last October.

There’s no doubt what brings the best out of this gelding. He’s won four of his 16 starts on synthetics but is yet to get off the mark in 14 attempts on turf. He had a near miss in the Mile Vase Final at Lingfield on Good Friday but will continue to run on grass this summer.

Trainer says

He’s been a great All-Weather horse. He needs to be able to get into a rhythm in his races as he just lengthens. In fairness to him he didn’t get the rub of the green in two races at Redcar, getting hampered, but we’ll persevere, possibly stepping him up to 10f.

This son of Dark Angel only joined Julie in the spring from James Ferguson after winning three times on turf. Undeniably well handicapped, he is currently rated 10lb lower than he was when last scoring at Yarmouth off 97 in September 2022.

Trainer says

It’s early days but we were pleased with his re-appearance run in a Class 2 at Newcastle when he needed it, but it just didn’t work out for him at Windsor after that. We were keen to qualify him for the summer sprint final there, but he got caught mid-track away from all the action and just didn’t finish off his race. He has a lot of talent and will hopefully pop up at some stage.

The Bunbury Cup at Newmarket and the International Handicap at Ascot are among the targets for this 7f specialist who posted back-to-back wins at Newmarket last summer for previous trainer Clive Cox.

Trainer says

He’s a wonderful racehorse to have around the place. He’s tough and hardy and really enjoys his work. We gave him a wind operation in the spring and though his first two runs didn’t work out he had legitimate excuses. Doncaster was a bit too sharp for him then he scoped a bit dirty after his run at Newmarket. He’s a horse with a big race in him.

A lightly-raced five-year-old with a good strike rate (4 from 14), Lattam won the Seaton Delaval Handicap at Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate Festival for William Haggas last summer before finishing second in the Lincoln on his stable debut.

Trainer says

He’s very ground dependent but a useful handicapper when he gets his conditions. Testing ground slows the others down but enables him to maintain a strong, even gallop, just as he did when he finished second in the Lincoln. He’s effective on the All-Weather but they went no gallop at Newcastle the other day in a race he’d won last year and that just didn’t suit him.

Now a nine-year-old, this seven-times winner has plied his trade in Pattern races and top handicaps, posting a career best off a mark of 103 at Musselburgh in 2020. Though on the downgrade, he has shown he retains enough ability to win off a falling mark.

Trainer says

We were pleased with his comeback run at Newmarket in April and he’s had some excuses since then. He’s a notch below his best but we still believe in this horse and will keep going as long as he’s enjoying his racing.

His win over the extended 1m at Beverley at the end of May was his first since scoring at Carlisle two years earlier. A first-time visor helped he rediscover his sparkle on the Westwood, and he should be able to build on his record of four wins from 16 starts on turf.

Trainer says

Sometimes one simple thing can spark a horse back into form and with him it was the addition of a visor. He won in one at Beverley in May and to be fair was in at the deep end in a better race at Newmarket last time. He’s a good work horse at home and stiff tracks like Carlisle and Beverley are his thing.

This four-year-old son of Dandy Man has finished second four times in a row since arriving from John McConnell in Ireland, creeping 5lb up the handicap in the process. A maiden winner over 5f at Bellewstown, he has been campaigned over 6f this year.

Trainer says

To say he keeps on finishing second he hasn’t done much wrong. We put the cheekpieces on him at Doncaster but 6f on fast ground was just too sharp for him. Timeform gave him a good figure after that, so hopefully we can go one better.

Nick Bradley Racing’s gelding underwent wind surgery in the spring following two underwhelming runs on turf and the All-Weather. The four-year-old’s only success was achieved on Tapeta, but he went close in a heritage handicap at Newmarket last summer for previous trainers John and Thady Gosden. He could run over 1m at Sandown on Saturday.

Trainer says

He’s done well since the wind operation, chasing home a highly progressive winner at Nottingham but enjoying no luck in running at Redcar. He’d have gone close with a clear run that day and remains well handicapped.

Lightly raced, David and Emma Armstrong’s home-bred daughter of Pivotal has shown promise in both starts for Camacho at Redcar and Pontefract.

Trainer says

She’s quite an emotional filly but has plenty of ability and it’s really important for her owners that she wins a race, being by the great Pivotal. She can go handicapping now off a workable mark of 63 and will be best suited by a stiff 5f.

He took advantage of a falling mark to win at Newbury in April – his breakthrough success on turf. Whilst he prefers ease in the ground, he is effective on the All-Weather, winning at Kempton Park, Newcastle and Southwell, and is set to reappear at Doncaster on Friday.

Trainer says

He got his ground at Newbury where he was able to show his best form. He needs rain, so placing him isn’t always that easy, but he’s a capable performer when it all comes together.

A smart sprinter who has run some big races in valuable handicaps, the six-year-old son of Garswood wasn’t disgraced when stepping into hotter company this year and has some Pattern race targets later in the season.

Trainer says

We plan to run him in the Listed Beverley Bullet if the ground isn’t too quick and, if everything goes to plan, might take our chance in the Group 1 Flying Five in Ireland, which can be an open race for its grade. Though he ran a nice race in the Palace House at Newmarket he aggravated an old splint, so we had to back off him, but he’s still got a lot to offer.

The six-year-old returned to form in timely fashion at Ripon at the end of May – his first win since scoring at York in October 2022. Still well handicapped on that old form, he may reappear at Ayr this weekend.

Trainer says

He’s another one who wants softer ground and got it at Ripon, but he enjoyed stepping back up in trip. Three of his four wins have come at around 10f and we’re hoping he is still open to a bit more progress.

Elite Racing’s four-year-old daughter of Zoffany won at Haydock last summer but hasn’t added to that success, despite running well in defeat, notably at Newcastle and Thirsk.

Trainer says

She was a bit unlucky at Newcastle and has had a few excuses elsewhere. She won over 7f, but we think she’s ready for a step up to 1m. Soft ground is ideal for her. She shows a lot of talent at home and for that reason we don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.

A Dandy Man gelding who has been consistent, winning a 6f handicap on the Tapeta at Southwell last November before supplementing that with a 5f success at Beverley in May off a 5lb higher rating.

Trainer says

A tough and hardy horse whose latest run at Newcastle was much more encouraging. He didn’t enjoy the fast ground at Thirsk before that when he changed his legs and got unbalanced but he’s much more at home with some cut in the ground.

A winner on a sound surface at Sandown for William Haggas before being gelded and undergoing wind surgery, he probably had excuses on his stable debut at York last month but remains open to progress.

Trainer says

The ground was too soft for him there, but we like this horse a lot and believe there are some nice handicaps in him on fast ground. We’ve not had him long enough to judge him at home, but he looks to be on a fair mark off 86.

Another relative newcomer to the yard, he remains a maiden after arriving from Andrew Balding for 37,000gns at the autumn sales. The son of Blue Point has shown definite signs of promise over 6f this year.

Trainer says

We’re still learning about him, but he’s run well at Chester and Newmarket and should be winning soon. He ran well at Chester from a wide position even though he didn’t handle the track that well. He stayed on nicely and looks like he’ll appreciate a step up in trip.

A colt by Showcasing who cost 60,000gns as a yearling, he is likely to make his debut at Carlisle on Saturday.

Trainer says

He’s out of Castle Hill Cassie, who was a Listed winner for Ben Haslam. He’s been showing us plenty of ability at home and isn’t short of speed. We’re also looking forward to introducing a nice filly be Territories called Elite Polka, who is stepping up nicely with homework, and another called Sweet Antique who looks nice though we haven’t pushed too many buttons.

A debut winner at Carlisle, this daughter of classy juvenile Threat certainly knew her job after being bought at the breeze-ups by Shaquille’s owner Martin Hughes for 62,000gns.

Trainer says

We’ve always been sweet on her, so it wasn’t a big surprise to see her win on debut, despite being green. She galloped strongly to the line and Ryan Sexton had trouble pulling her up. We feel we can be a bit punchy with her targets now, so the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot could be a possibility, but we haven’t ruled out a tilt at the Group 2 Lowther at York.
