Mark Johnston's annual short break to the Qatar Godwood Festival will be very much welcomed as he takes in the south coast sea air and looks to improve on an already remarkable record at the five-day festival.

The Middleham trainer holds the record amongst current trainers with 86 Glorious winners and has been champion trainer at the meeting on no less than 13 times. The winner-hungry Johnston has a raiding party of over 30 horses this time around and had to settle for a brace last year with Maydanny and Hochfeld who are once again in action.

There is no place for the sidelined Subjectivist in the Goodwood Cup unfortunately but Sir Ron Priestley and Nayef Road throw down the gauntlet to Stradivarius this time and there look several interesting contenders during the week that have possibilities of hitting the back of the neck.

Charlie Johnston hopes to enjoy some of the fun as he shuttles back and forth from Kingsley Park and he kindly guided Tony Elves of attheraces.com through those that be looking to fly the flag for the Middleham juggernaut.
