Nicolas Caullery is a man of many talents. Not only does he know how to train Group 1 winners, but he is also the lead singer in a band that has entertained the crowds at ParisLongchamp on Arc weekend.
“Our band is booked solid in May and June,” says the charismatic trainer who is based in Chantilly where he looks after about 60 horses.
Caullery is often labelled a handicap trainer, but with King Gold’s victory in last year's Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and Fort Payne’s success in a seven-furlong Group 3 at Meydan this winter, he proved that he is much more than a trainer of handicappers.
“I always say, it’s not a race for trainers, but a horse race,” he laughs good-heartedly. “I don’t have the big pedigrees that allow me to continuously run in Group races, but when I do come across them, I know how to use them.”
Here, Caullery talks to Liz Price of attheraces.com about his plans for his Group horses, including King Gold and Fort Payne, and tells her which handicappers to look out for in the months ahead.
